Overview

The Osprey is an iconic fish-eating bird of prey widely seen along waterways, estuaries, and coastal shores. In The Gambia, it is a prominent Palearctic migrant, spending the northern winter cruising over tidal creeks, lagoons, and the broad stretches of the River Gambia.

Identification

The Osprey is readily identified by its stark white underparts, dark brown upperparts, and distinct dark eye-stripe running across a bright white head. In flight, long, narrow wings show distinctive angled carpal joints and dark wrist patches, giving it a characteristic gull-like or bowed silhouette. Females typically show a more pronounced mottled brown breast band than males.

Habitat and behaviour

Ospreys frequent coastal lagoons, mangrove creeks, estuaries, and wide river stretches teeming with fish. They are famous for their dramatic hunting technique, hovering high over the water before plunging feet-first to seize fish with specialized reversible outer toes and spiny foot pads. They often carry their catch head-first into the wind to a favorite perch.

Migration and seasonality

The majority of Ospreys seen in The Gambia are non-breeding visitors arriving from Europe between September and April, escaping the northern winter. A number of immature birds also remain through the boreal summer, making this magnificent raptor a rewarding sight along the coast and inland waterways for much of the year.

Excellent locations for spotting Ospreys include Kotu Creek, Tanji Bird Reserve, and the vast waterways of Tanbi Wetland Complex and Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve. Watch for birds scanning the water from mangrove snags, dead trees, or boat masts, or wheeling high overhead on thermal updrafts.
