Overview

The white-billed buffalo-weaver is a large, gregarious weaver bird known for its massive communal stick nests and bustling social colonies. Widespread across the Sahel and Sudan savanna zones, it is a charismatic and noisy resident of the dry woodland and farmland habitats of The Gambia.

Identification

Measuring roughly 23 to 24 centimetres, it is significantly larger than typical weavers. Breeding adult males are mostly uniform black with a distinctive, swollen creamy-white bill and white patches on the flight feathers visible in flight and at rest. Non-breeding males and adult females show a darker, horn-coloured bill and brownish-black plumage flecked with white or greyish edges on the mantle and underparts. Immatures resemble duller females with mottled throats.

Habitat and behaviour

This species thrives in dry savanna, open acacia bushveld, semi-arid woodland, and rural agricultural clearings. Highly sociable, white-billed buffalo-weavers forage in small to medium-sized flocks on the ground, walking deliberately while feeding on seeds, fallen grain, fruit, and terrestrial insects. They often associate with livestock or wild ungulates, snapping up disturbed invertebrates.

Breeding strategy

White-billed buffalo-weavers construct colossal, messy communal stick nests, often placed high in baobab, acacia, or silk-cotton trees. Multiple pairs inhabit separate compartments within a single tangled structure, which they continuously defend and reinforce. Their colonies are lively hubs of activity, filled with harsh chattering, rasping calls, and complex social displays.

Buffalo-weavers are typically encountered as you travel upriver away from the coastal belt into the drier savanna habitats of the Central River and Upper River regions.
