White-backed Night Heron in The Gambia

Overview

The White-backed Night Heron is a secretive waterside bird and a highly prized sighting. Its preference for shaded creeks and overhanging cover makes every encounter feel special.

Identification

A compact, dark night heron with a striking white back and pale underparts. The bird's red eye and heavy bill are especially noticeable at close range.

Habitat and behaviour

It favours mangroves, wooded streams, shaded wetlands and quiet pools. It is most active around dusk and dawn, but patient observers may find roosting birds during the day.

Birdwatching in The Gambia

The White-backed Night Heron is scarce and localised, so sightings are never guaranteed. A knowledgeable local guide greatly improves the chances of finding it without disturbing its secluded habitat.

Field note

Move quietly along shaded creeks and scan low branches over the water. Early mornings and late afternoons generally offer the best conditions.
