Birdwatching at Bintang Bolong

Bintang Bolong is a broad, winding creek that runs into the south bank of the River Gambia. Lined with mangroves and fringed by woodland and farmland, it offers peaceful waterside birding away from the busier coastal sites.

The creek is a welcome stop on the return journey from upriver. Mangrove channels, mudbanks and creek-side trees attract kingfishers, herons, waders and sunbirds, and the open water gives good views of birds of prey.

Join experienced local guide **Lamin Jobaate** for a relaxed visit. Lamin knows the best viewpoints along the creek and where mangrove specialities are most likely to show.

Habitat

Bintang Bolong includes:

- Wide tidal creek channels
- Red and white mangroves
- Exposed mudbanks at low tide
- Creek-side woodland and palms
- Farmland and village edges

Tide levels make a big difference here, with mudbanks attracting waders and herons as the water drops.

Birds to Look For

Possible highlights include:

- **Mouse-brown Sunbird**
- **Blue-breasted Kingfisher**
- **Malachite Kingfisher**
- **Goliath Heron**
- **Western Reef Heron**
- **Pink-backed Pelican**
- **African Darter**
- **Osprey**
- **African Fish Eagle**
- **Whimbrel**

Birds move with the tide and the season, so sightings of particular species cannot be guaranteed.

What a Guided Visit Is Like

Most visits combine birding from the creek banks with time over lunch, watching the water for kingfishers, herons and passing raptors. Lamin will check the mangrove edges for sunbirds and other small birds.

Bintang Bolong is usually visited on the way back to the coast, together with Farasutu Forest and Mr Bah’s photography hide.

Photography at Bintang Bolong

Open water and mangrove edges provide attractive settings, but bright reflections can be challenging.

Useful tips include:

- Use a long lens for herons and waders on distant mudbanks.
- Watch exposure carefully when photographing birds against bright water.
- Look for kingfishers using regular perches over the creek.
- Move slowly along the bank to avoid flushing feeding birds.
- Ask Lamin about tide times for the best wader activity.

Best Time to Visit

Bintang Bolong can be visited year-round, but the dry season from November to April is the main birdwatching period and brings migrant waders.

Morning and late afternoon give the best light and activity. A falling tide is often the most productive time for waders and herons.
