Overview

The Abyssinian Roller is one of the most conspicuous and photogenic birds in The Gambia. It is often seen from roadside perches, where its turquoise plumage glows against the dry-season landscape.

Identification

This large roller has a pale blue body, brown back, dark mask and two exceptionally long black tail streamers. In flight it shows broad blue wings with strong dark contrasts.

Habitat and behaviour

It thrives in open savannah, farmland, villages and lightly wooded country. From wires, posts and exposed branches it watches for beetles, grasshoppers and other ground prey. Displaying birds perform rolling flights while calling loudly.

The species is widespread and can be found at many coastal and inland birding sites. Road journeys frequently produce views, while open habitats allow time to observe hunting and display behaviour.
