Egyptian Plover

Overview

The Egyptian Plover is one of the most celebrated birds of a journey upriver through The Gambia. Its bold black, white, chestnut and blue-grey plumage makes an unforgettable sight against pale sandbanks.

Identification

Look for a neat, upright wader with a black crown and breast-band, white face markings, chestnut underparts and a blue-grey back. In flight, the contrasting black-and-white wing pattern is especially striking.

Habitat and behaviour

This species favours broad rivers, exposed sandbars and muddy or sandy banks. It walks briskly near the waterline, picking insects and other small prey from the surface. Birds may stand quietly between feeding bursts and can appear remarkably composed in open surroundings.

The upper River Gambia is the key area, with Basse and suitable sandbanks farther upriver among the best-known possibilities. Water levels and exposed banks influence where birds feed, so local knowledge is extremely valuable.
