Overview

Four-banded Sandgrouse are beautifully patterned birds of dry country. Their swift evening flights to water and evocative calls create a memorable conclusion to a day of Gambian birdwatching.

Identification

They are compact, pigeon-like birds with pointed wings, short legs and intricate buff, brown and black plumage. Males show bold black-and-white bands across the face and breast; females are more densely barred.

Habitat and behaviour

The species uses dry savannah, open woodland, scrub and farmland, feeding on seeds on the ground. Flocks often travel to water around dusk or after dark, flying quickly and calling as they approach.

Inland Gambia offers the best habitat, with opportunities around suitable tracks, open country and traditional drinking places. Exact timing varies, and birds can be difficult to see once the light fades.
