Giant Kingfisher

Overview

The Giant Kingfisher is an imposing waterside hunter and a favourite photographic subject. Its size, powerful bill and loud, rattling call give it a commanding presence beside Gambian rivers and lagoons.

Identification

This very large kingfisher is boldly patterned black, white and chestnut with a shaggy crest. Males have a chestnut breast and spotted flanks; females show a spotted breast with chestnut on the belly.

Habitat and behaviour

It occupies rivers, creeks, lagoons, reservoirs and sheltered coastal waters. A bird often waits from an exposed branch, post or mangrove root before plunging heavily into the water for fish, crabs or frogs.

It can be encountered at several coastal and inland wetlands, including suitable habitats around Abuko, Tanji, Marakissa and along the River Gambia. Quiet early-morning visits can provide excellent views.
