Malachite Kingfisher

Overview

Small, vivid and full of character, the Malachite Kingfisher is one of The Gambia’s most attractive wetland birds. Its jewel-like colours are especially bright in early morning light.

Identification

Look for a tiny kingfisher with electric-blue upperparts, orange underparts, white throat patches, a red bill and a short blue-and-black crest. It often sits low and upright on reeds or fine branches.

Habitat and behaviour

It uses freshwater pools, rice fields, marshes, slow creeks and sheltered river edges. From a low perch it dives for small fish, tadpoles, aquatic insects and crustaceans, frequently returning to the same lookout.

The species is widespread in suitable habitat, including wetland sites near the coast and the bolons around Tendaba. Slow boat trips and quiet walks beside reed-fringed water can produce excellent viewing opportunities.
