Violet Turaco

Overview

The Violet Turaco is a spectacular canopy bird whose deep purple plumage, yellow forehead and crimson flight feathers seem almost tropical beyond belief. Its presence often adds a dramatic highlight to a woodland visit.

Identification

It is a large, long-tailed bird with glossy violet-blue plumage, a red bill, yellow forehead and bare red skin around the eye. When it flies, brilliant crimson panels flash through the wings.

Habitat and behaviour

Violet Turacos inhabit woodland, forest edge, gardens and mature riverine trees. They move through the canopy in pairs or small groups, feeding mainly on fruit and sometimes flowers, buds and leaves. Their loud calls often reveal them first.

Wooded sites in western and inland Gambia can hold this species, including established forest reserves and well-treed village landscapes. Early visits are useful while birds are active and the canopy is easier to scan.
