Overview

The Yellow-crowned Gonolek is one of The Gambia’s most dazzling and characteristic birds. It may remain hidden in thick cover, but its explosive calls and brilliant plumage make a successful sighting unforgettable.

Identification

Adults are glossy black above with a golden-yellow crown, blazing scarlet underparts and a yellow patch on the wing. The strong bill and upright stance reveal its shrike-like build.

Habitat and behaviour

It favours dense scrub, woodland edge, gardens, mangrove margins and riverine thickets. Birds usually occur in pairs, moving methodically through cover to take insects and small animals. Duetting calls often advertise a territory.
