Birdwatching at Jahaly & Pacharr Rice Fields
The Jahaly and Pacharr rice fields are among the best-known inland wetland sites in The Gambia. A large area of irrigated paddies, channels and flooded fields near the River Gambia attracts an impressive range of waterbirds and seed-eaters.
For many visitors, the rice fields are the best chance on an inland tour to see Black Crowned Crane and Greater Painted-snipe, along with herons, egrets, jacanas and migrant waders.
Join experienced local guide **Lamin Jobaate** to explore the fields. Lamin checks which areas are flooded or recently harvested, as this changes where the birds gather.

- Irrigation channels and embankments

What a Guided Visit Is Like
Visits usually involve walking along the embankments in the early morning, scanning flooded fields for cranes, herons and waders. Lamin will check channel edges carefully for skulking species such as painted-snipe.
Jahaly and Pacharr is part of the inland circuit from Janjanbureh, alongside Sankulay, Bansang or Kunkilling, and Kudang.

Open fields give good light and clean backgrounds, but many birds are wary.
Useful tips include:
- Use a long lens and stay on the embankments.
- Keep the sun behind you for well-lit subjects.
- Watch channel edges for birds feeding close to cover.
- Avoid walking into farmers’ fields.
- Let Lamin position the group without flushing feeding birds.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to April is the main birdwatching period, when inland roads are accessible and migrant waders are present.
Early morning brings the best light and activity. The rice fields are best included in a multi-day tour based around Janjanbureh.
