Birdwatching at Kunkilling Forest Park
Kunkilling Forest Park is a protected area of woodland and forest in the Central River Region, within reach of Bansang and Janjanbureh. It offers shaded inland birding that contrasts with the open rice fields and river margins nearby.
The forest gives birdwatchers the chance to find woodland species of the interior, including barbets, woodpeckers, turacos, flycatchers and raptors, in a quieter setting than the better-known coastal reserves.
Join experienced local guide **Lamin Jobaate** for a guided walk. Lamin will listen for calls and check fruiting trees and clearings, where birds are often easiest to see.
Habitat
Kunkilling Forest Park contains:
- Dry deciduous woodland
- Patches of taller forest
- Open clearings and tracks
- Scrub and secondary growth
- Surrounding farmland
This variety supports canopy birds, ground-feeding species and birds of prey.
Birds to Look For
Possible highlights include:
- **Violet Turaco**
- **Bearded Barbet**
- **Vieillot’s Barbet**
- **Grey Woodpecker**
- **African Paradise Flycatcher**
- **White-crested Helmetshrike**
- **Northern Puffback**
- **Yellow-crowned Gonolek**
- **Dark Chanting Goshawk**

Woodland birds can be shy and their presence varies with the season, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.
What a Guided Visit Is Like
A visit usually involves a gentle walk along tracks and clearings in the early morning, stopping to watch fruiting trees and follow calls. Lamin will help the group locate birds in the canopy and on the forest floor.
Kunkilling is an alternative to Bansang on the inland circuit, and combines well with Sankulay, Jahaly and Pacharr rice fields, and Kudang.
Photography at Kunkilling Forest Park
Woodland photography can be challenging because light levels are lower and birds move quickly.
Useful tips include:
- Use a lens with good low-light performance.
- Raise the ISO rather than using a shutter speed that is too slow.
- Watch clearings and forest edges where light is better.
- Move quietly and avoid sudden movements.
- Let Lamin position the group for the best angle.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit, with comfortable walking and accessible inland roads.
Bird activity is strongest in the first hours after sunrise and again in the late afternoon.
